Vitamine D and COVID

Vitamin D deficiency and COVID-19

.

Vitamin D is the hormone our skin makes when exposed to ultraviolet rays.☀️

.

It is well-known that vitamin D is crucial for the health of our bones. It has also function in mood regulation, synchronization of "clock genes", immune support, inflammation reduction, regulation of calcium absorption and homeostasis, insulin secretion, synthesis and secretion of parathyroid and thyroid hormones, modulation of cell proliferation.

👉Circumstantial evidence shows a link between vitamin D status and outcomes of COVID-19.

.

Research has shown that COVID-19 patients from countries with higher mortality rates had lower levels of vitamin D compared to those from countries with lower mortality rates.

.

❗Findings suggest a link between deficiency of vitamin D and an increased risk of more severe coronavirus infection and mortality.

.

Vitamin D might help to reduce the inflammatory response ("cytokine storm") to infection with SARS-CoV-2 and it also supports the production of antimicrobial peptides in the respiratory tract.

.

During the summer months the majority of people get sufficient amounts of vitamin D from sunlight. However, some people may carry the gene variants that predispose them to vitamin D deficiency. It's a good idea to do genetic testing to better know your risk.

.

💊Vitamin D deficiency is harmful, however we do not recommend taking excessive doses of vitamin D without first making a blood test.

.

💉The Vitamin D 25-Dihydroxy blood test measures the active form of Vitamin D, so it's good to make this test before starting supplementation.

.

👉How can you boost your vitamin D levels?

✔️increase your sun exposure (but don't burn your skin), especially in the morning (brain's pineal gland benefits from sunlight stimulation)

✔️consume fatty fish and seafood

✔️eat fortified foods and mushrooms
