Reason and emotion are often described as two horses pulling us in opposite directions. It is common to think that emotions interfere with rational thinking.
.
We're trained to regard emotions as irrational impulses. When we describe someone as "emotional," it's usually a criticism that suggests that they lack good judgment.
.
❗️The truth is that “emotion” is NOT the enemy of reason.
.
Emotion helps us screen, organize, and prioritize the information that bombards us. It influences what information we find salient, relevant, convincing or memorable.
.
👉Have you ever heard about Antonio Damasio’s (neuroscientist) famous patient “Elliot"?
.
Elliot was a businessman who lost part of his brain’s frontal lobe while having surgery to remove a tumor. He suffered from insufficient communication between the frontal lobe and the amygdala. He had difficulty experiencing emotions, so he was paralyzed by an inability to make decisions.
.
Emotions play an essential role in helping us make decisions. The ability to access, interpret, and act upon our emotions is essential if we are to make good choices that will allow us to be more fulfilled and effective.
