Preventing Brain Loss with B Vitamins?

1 in 5 of us will suffer from cognitive impairment by our 70s, and half will progress to dementia within five years, progressing from cognitive impairment without dementia, to dementia, and death. The faster we can slow this process or interrupt it, the better.

Alzheimer's disease and cardiovascular diseases share a common risk factor, elevated blood levels of homocysteine, an amino acid which becomes elevated by inadequate dietary intakes of vitamins B2, B6, B9 (folate), and B12.

.

A double-blind, randomized controlled trial showed that in people with moderate cognitive impairment (MCI), lowering homocysteine with B vitamins can slow the rate of accelerated brain atrophy. Our brain slowly atrophies as we age, but the shrinkage of patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease is much faster ("Preventing Alzheimer's disease-related gray matter atrophy by B-vitamin treatment" 2013)

More vitamins B➡️less homocysteine➡️less brain atrophy in people with MCI

Ways to lower homocysteine with diet:

eat foods containing folate like leafy greens, asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, strawberries, avocado

eat animal foods like beef liver or if you're vegan or vegetarian take the supplement (methyl-B12)

eat vitamin B6 containing foods like potatoes, bananas, chicken

supplement with creatine if you're vegan or vegetarian or if you're physically active

eat enough omega-3s because they are essential fats that your body cannot produce itself

don't avoid eating egg yolks or beef liver, they're great sources of choline
