Early caregiving can impact our life for decades

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦Early caregiving impacts our life for decades.

.

The earliest relationships in life shape people’s personalities and skills. For example, studies analyzing early caregiving experiences at 54 months old have been prospectively related to various measures of academic competence. Interestingly, the association between early caregiving and academic competence at age 6 was comparable to the correlation between early caregiving and academic competence at age 10 years.

.

Moreover, early caregiving experiences are negatively associated with behavior problems over several years. These behavioral problems include internalizing problems (e.g. low self-esteem, self-harm, and social isolation) and externalizing problems (e.g. physical aggression, disobeying rules, cheating, stealing, and destruction of property).

.

Furthermore, one longitudinal study following people from early childhood through age 32 years had remarkable results.

.

In resume, this study showed that early maternal sensitivity had enduring predictive associations with social and academic competence through age 32 years, suggesting that early caregiving experiences leave an enduring mark on various forms of adaptation across a major portion of the lifespan.

.

Overall, we are deeply shaped by our early relationship with our caregivers influencing our future personality, behavior, social competence and academic skills.

.

❗️Early experiences are the foundation of people’s lives, hence the societal importance of a healthy caregiving experience for our kids.
