Rumination before sleep

👉What is the most common psychological reason why people can’t fall asleep?

👉Rumination

.

❗️Rumination is the repetition of the same thought in your head over and over again. A habit of rumination can be dangerous to your mental health.

.

Here’s what to try on your own to stop ruminating before sleep:

1️⃣Try the cognitive refocusing technique. This involves selecting (before you go to bed) a competing pleasant motivator to distract yourself with. If you like horse riding, you might imagine yourself riding a horse in the woods.

.

2️⃣Schedule a worry break during the day. Give yourself a few minutes to worry and ruminate. When time’s up, it’s time to move on.

.

3️⃣Let go of what you can’t control. Ask yourself “what can I change, if anything?” If you cannot change the situation, let it go. For things you can change, set up a list of small goals, and make the appropriate changes.

.

4️⃣Practice 4-7-8 Breathing. Inhale for a count of four, hold for seven counts, and then blow out for eight counts. Do this at least five to seven times, and your heart rate will slow way down.
